Hi, I am Georgie Smith.

I am the founder and President of the nonprofit A Sense of Home which strives to prevent homelessness by creating first-ever homes for youth aging out of foster care with donated furniture and home goods.

ASOH began when a young person aging out of foster care noticed a video on my blog. How I responded spawned a wonderful movement of love in action. What I thought was just a one-off random act of kindness became an opportunity for the community to come together to implement a sustainable solution and improve the lives of the most disenfranchised whilst also improving society as a whole. 50% of the homeless population were once in foster care. Furniture is the number one household item occupying landfills. Volunteerism is the greatest anti-depressant in the history of humanity. Great excess and the power of volunteerism are converted into a force for good to improve the lives of former foster youth at ASOH. 10 years later we have created 1,050 homes.

In January 2025, at the outset of the LA Fires, we quickly deployed our systems, to support those displaced by the fires. Operating out of a newly donated 10,000 sq foot warehouse, near the Altadena community, we launched a new emergency initiative, Home Bank LA to provide fully functioning home environments for our community members who lost everything in the LA fires.

Simply sharing what we have too much of creates sustainable tenancy for others. When we lift one, we lift all. When we gather with strangers and/or friends to share our gifts, joy, and pain, we bear witness to our inextricable human connection as one.

For the last 10 years A Sense of Home (ASOH) has been perfecting its technology and operational systems to harness community volunteerism, and donated furniture and home goods to transform empty spaces into homes for displaced persons. We have focused solely on creating homes for former foster youth. Within days of the outbreak of the fires, we launched a new emergency initiative, Home Bank LA to provide fully functioning home environments for our community members who lost everything in the LA fires.

To meet the moment, we quickly deployed our systems, to support those displaced by the fires. Operating out of a newly donated 10,000 sq foot warehouse, near the Altadena community, we are custom designing and providing furniture and home goods to those who have lost everything. Since the original random-act -of-kindness, Georgie Smith has earned a number of honors, including top 10 CNN Hero , Home Beautiful’s “20 People Who Will change the Design Industry”, a 2018 DVF Award nomination at the United Nation in NYC, a Shero at the 2017 Women's Choice Awards, as well as being featured in the book and global exhibit 200 Women Who Will Change the Way You See the World .
